Bahamas
DXpedition 2009May 5, 2009
Genesis
A lot of people
have been asking my why I would want to spend two weeks in the
Bahamas, especially in hot June. Ham radio and island time are
the two main reasons. Last October Renee, Mark, Pete, and I
spend a little time hamming around in the Bahamas as part of
Hamradio Cruise 2008. It's hard to explain the joyous feeling
of working the other side pile-up. There has not been many
times in the past where I've been subjected to the wall of sound
coming back at me from the RF void. It was surprising to feel
the pent-up desire to work C6A. On 17 meters it was a new
country for many of the hams I had a chance to talk with.
Rag Chewing
I've come the realization that
I'll never be a crack DXpedition operator. I just love to rag
chew too much. IMHO there is not much joy in just passing a
callsign, name, and signal report. There has to be more than
life than just a couple of squiggles in the logbook. During
the cruise I experienced a bit of interference on the gentlemen's
band, 17 meters. It was surprising to hear a couple of lids
tuning up right on top of me. I realize that we are at the
bottom of the solar cycle and the bands are likely to
closes/change/shift at any movement, but life is way too short to be
a jerk. And BTW it was MY pile-up and I can run it any way I
choose. If you don't like it, come on down and play in the
Bahamas; Nassau is only about 120 miles East of Miami (a lot closer
than Albany and NYC).
See you on the airwaves.
