The bands were a bit more friendly today. 17m has been
open both in the morning and evening. This morning I had
the chance to meet Mike, C6ANX on 17 meters. Mike is one
of the few active hams on New Providence and is less than five
miles from the house. We spoke on the "twisted-pair" and
hopefully will have a chance for an eyeball QSO this weekend.
In the afternoon, I ran into N0HVN/C6A, maritime mobile on a
chartered sail boat out of Ft. Lauderdale. Jay was
surprised how strong my signal was, and he figured we were only
about 25 miles apart (pretty good for "ground wave" or perhaps
better, "water wave.") Jay and family will be into Nassau
later this week and we may set up some sort of eyeball QSO.
The biggest catch of the day was Vasiliy, ER4DX, from
Moldova on 20
meters. He was about 20 over and I got him on the first
call.
The G5RV has been giving us a bit of problem
and wouldn't load on 80 meters. Craig suggested making the
antenna more of a flat top; the initial set-up had an inverted-vee
with about a 90 degrees at the vertex. We moved the East
end rope out to the the far tree-line and the antenna will now
load well on 80.
